MIDNAPORE, 12 AUG: Ms Medha Patkar, the Narmada Bachao Andolan supremo, at a Press conference here today threw up a challenge to the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s government by saying that she will soon move to Lalgarh.

“I will see how the government prevents me from entering Lalgarh as I had been successful in venturing to Singur and Nandigram earlier in peoples’ movement there,” she said.

Last month while proceeding to Lalgarh under the banner of National Alliance for People’s Movement, a forum comprising 25 organisations, she was “illegally and undemocratically” stopped and later arrested by the police at Debra, over 60 km from Lalgarh for breaking prohibitory orders in Debra, despite the fact Section 144 was not in force in Debra.

Ms Patkar said that they are with the tribals of Lalgarh in their agitation to have their rights established. “I have information that the joint forces in league with the CPI-M cadres have been perpetrating torture on the tribals in Lalgarh by driving the people from their homes by torching their huts” she alleged. The plight of the tribals particularly in police operation will be spread across the country to expose the so-called pro-poor posture of the Left here, she said.

“I had been successful in Narmada Banchao Andolan and the Nandigram episode with the support of the people so will be the case with Lalgarh. I won’t let the Lalgarh agitation flop,” Ms Patkar declared.

Referring to CPI-M leaders’ conflict with the Governor, Ms Patkar supported the stand taken by the Governor as she finds no fault in Governor for as head of the state Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi has tried to exercise his constitutional rights by giving importance to public grievances and she believes that the Prime Minister will also support Mr Gandhi’s stand. Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Mr Biman Bose and other Alimuddin bosses must realise that Mr Gandhi is not a “typical” Governor unlike many of his predecessors. The Statesman
